For more than two decades, Nexium has helped millions of people treat heartburn, acid reflux, and other conditions caused by heartburn and acid reflux. For decades, Nexium has been available only through a prescription, but now research has found that some over-the-counter (OTC) Nexium products can be safely used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December found that nearly one-third of all heartburn patients took a prescription medication containing esomeprazole, the active ingredient in Nexium, for four weeks, or up to six months. The condition is known as “Helle” and is characterized by painful and swollen, heartburn.
“This medication is designed to provide 24/7 symptom relief for patients who experience severe heartburn,” lead study author Dr. Steven Nissen, director of the Center for Health Policy Research at the University of Virginia School of Public Health, said in a statement. “Our study supports the FDA’s decision to require patients to consult with their healthcare provider prior to using this drug for heartburn relief.”
For more than a decade, Nexium has been available only through a prescription, but now research has found that some over-the-counter Nexium products can be safely used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. In a new study, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a safety warning for several OTC OTC products containing esomeprazole, a common prescription medication used to treat acid reflux and heartburn.
The F. D. A. advisory committee on the use of Nexium in 2004 recommended that manufacturers of OTC Nexium have not reduced the strength of their own OTC Nexium products to the same standards as those produced by other companies. The committee also noted that other OTC Nexium products containing the same active ingredient, which is also known as Nurofen, can cause liver problems.
The committee also concluded that the FDA had not considered “whether the use of OTC Nexium to treat acid reflux and heartburn was safe” and that the FDA had not advised consumers to take Nexium products containing the same strength before or after eating or drinking food containing esomeprazole, a drug that may reduce stomach acid.
“In conclusion, the FDA recommended that all OTC Nexium products for heartburn and acid reflux contain the same amount of esomeprazole,” Dr. Nissen said in a statement. “This advice was based on data from the largest clinical study evaluating the safety and efficacy of Nurofen in patients with reflux or heartburn that has been completed.”
Dr. Nissen said the FDA advisory committee did not advise consumers to stop taking Nexium if they develop heartburn or heartburn lasting longer than four hours. In fact, the agency warned that people who have heartburn or other acid reflux symptoms should not take Nexium because the medication has a high risk of causing heartburn.
“It’s not recommended to take Nexium for longer than four hours in order to reduce the risk of heartburn,” said Dr. Nissen. “Esomeprazole has the highest potential for causing heartburn.”
The FDA has not received any reports of serious heartburn or heartburn that occur during the five-month treatment period in which the study was conducted, said Dr. “There are no known serious cardiovascular side effects from taking Nexium, and it’s not recommended to take Nexium for longer than four hours in order to reduce the risk of heartburn,” he added.
Nissen noted that patients who have heartburn or acid reflux symptoms should not take Nexium products containing esomeprazole, and the FDA advisory committee recommended that all OTC Nexium products for heartburn and acid reflux contain the same amount of esomeprazole, or equivalent dose, as those supplied by other manufacturers.
Nissen said that when consumers try to decide whether to take Nexium products containing esomeprazole, it is important to ask their health care provider before taking Nexium products containing esomeprazole, and the FDA advisory committee also recommended that patients with chronic heartburn or other conditions should consult with their doctor before using Nexium products containing the same strength as those in those products. advisory committee also recommended that consumers who are allergic to esomeprazole should not take Nexium products containing esomeprazole, including the FDA warning about severe allergic reactions to the ingredients.
